Garmin - Reelax Whitsunday gfc 2014 Light Tackle Tournament
Thank you to all locals and visitors from different parts of Australia who competed in the Garmin - Reelax Whitsunday GFC 2014 (10kg) Light Tackle Tournament which was held on the 23rd - 26th October 2014. The weather was very kind to us with clear blue sky's and a calm sea, which help contribute to the number of anglers.
This tournament was one of our largest so far with 32 boats and 110 anglers all competing for the top prize. In the Under 7 meter division we had 14 boats and the Over 7 meter there was 18 boats.
Day One: All boats met outside the Clubhouse for the Sail past, to show off their decorated boats to family and friends watching from onshore and for the all important dress up competition.
The boats were then rounded up by VMR Whitsunday who kindly volunteered to do the shotgun start. 32 Boats all lined up, anxious to wet their lines. One of our generous sponsors 'Heli Taxis' flew past for a photo or 2, then 3,2,1 BANG they're off!!!
First Billfish for the day was caught & released by Ryan Kenny on board 'Sushi Hunter' (over 7mtrs).
Last Billfish for the day was caught & released by Jon Kasper on board 'Fighting Lady' (under 7 mtrs).
8 Black Marlin in total were caught and released with the boys from 'Fighting Lady' (under 7mtrs) setting the bar high claiming 4 of the 8. So the big question was 'Where is Fighting Lady?' and for the boats that knew the answer 'What were they using?'.
Other fish caught day one were a Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Cobia, Mackerel and plenty of Tuna.
Day Two: Was an absolutely stunning day to be on the water fishing. Everyone was eager to land the first Billfish of the day, Junior Jason Prince 'Kanoo II' (under 7mtrs) was the first in the Tournament and first angler on day two to land a Sailfish.
The morning was looking promising with a few Billfish marked & raised however when the first sked was radioed in only two had been landed. As the day went on, the numbers of billfish got better with 8 Black Marlin and 4 Sailfish landed. Mackerel and Tuna were a very different story, 23 Mackerel and 52 Tuna were landed. The only other fish caught on the day was a Cobia.
Last Billfish for the day was caught & released by Denziel Harris from 'Lascar II' (over 7mtrs).
At the end of Day 2, 'Fighting Lady' were still well ahead of the rest in both over and under 7 mtr categories.
Day Three: The final day of the tournament and what a spectacular day it was in the Whitsundays. It seemed like as soon as the boys from 'The Jem' (over 7mtrs) put their lines out the Billfish were up and teasing the anglers, with three strikes and no hook up's, Paul Campbell was the lucky angler to land himself one of the cheeky Sailfish, taking out the first Billfish of the day.
Captured & released on day three were 5 Marlin, 2 Sailfish, 11 Mackerel, 50 Tuna and 1 Wahoo. Last Billfish of the day and the tournament went to Rob Murolo from 'Renegade' (over 7mtrs).
The fishing had ceased for the tournament and it was time to freshen up and head down to the clubhouse for a well deserved pig on the spit and drinks while sitting back and watching the sunset. Once everyone's bellies were full it was time for the presentation.
First were the fun awards for the best dressed boat at the sail past and the funniest photo competition (on the briefing every boat was given an item to take creative photo's of over the weekend). The prizes for the best dressed boat went to a team from Mackay 'Weowner' with their halloween theme.
Below are the winning photo's from the funniest photo competition.
On to the more serious results, the tournament winners are all listed below.
The weekend was a great success and went very smoothly with a lot of positive feedback and most people saying they look forward to next year. The weekend takes a lot of planning and organizing and we'd like to thank everyone who stepped in and helped and a massive thank you to all of our sponsors, without our sponsors we do not have a tournament as great as this one. Please see below a list of our wonderful sponsors, please make an effort to support these businesses as they have made our tournament possible.
